Getting QTP 4.0 add-in to work on your computer involves two steps: downloading the add-in files to your computer and loading the add-in in Excel.

Table of Contents

Downloading QTP 4.0

We have tested the Queueing ToolPak 4.0 with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, with Excel 2000 and Excel XP.  The Queueing ToolPak may or may not work on other platforms.  Instructions for Excel 2007 are at the bottom of the page.

  1. If you have an earlier version of the Queueing ToolPak, then follow these instructions to remove it before installing QTP 4.0.
  2. Download qtp.exe to a folder of your choice.
  3. Double-click qtp.exe .  Click "OK" and then "Unzip."  This will "unzip" the files necessary for the Queueing ToolPak to work and copy them to your hard disk.  By default, the files are copied to C:\QTP\ but you can change the folder if you wish.  Click "Close."

Loading QTP 4.0

  1. To load QTP 4.0, open Excel and choose "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu.  Click the browse button, browse to the folder that you unzipped the QTP files to (C:\QTP\ by default), select qtp.xll and click "OK."  Click "OK" again.  The message below should appear indicating that the Queueing ToolPak has been loaded.  Click "OK."

  2. To verify that the Queueing ToolPak has been loaded correctly, look for a new QTP menu and choose help from that menu.  As well, open the function wizard and look for a new function category for "Queueing ToolPak."
  3. You are now ready to use the Queuing ToolPak.  The help file (also available here) contains a tutorial  that can help get you started.

Unloading QTP 4.0

To unload QTP 4.0, open Excel and choose "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu and uncheck the "Queueing ToolPak 4.0" option.  Click "OK."  You should see a dialog box confirming that QTP has been unloaded.  Unloading disables the add-in temporarily, without removing the add-in files.  To load QTP 4.0 again, follow the instructions in step 1 above.

Removing QTP 4.0

Follow these instructions to completely remove QTP 4.0 from your computer.

  1. Unload QTP 4.0, by opening Excel, choosing "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu, and unchecking the "Queueing ToolPak 4.0" option.  Click "OK."
  2. Exit from Excel.  Find and delete the following files from your hard drive: qtp.xll, qtp.chm.

  3. Open Excel again, choose "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu, and look for "qtp" in the add-in list.  Click on this entry.  When asked whether you want to remove the entry from the list of add-ins, click "Yes."  (This is apparently the only way to remove entries from the list of add-ins in Excel, believe it or not).

Removing Previous Versions of QTP

  1. Unload all previous versions of QTP, by opening Excel, choosing "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu, and unchecking all "Queueing ToolPak" entries in the list.  Click "OK."
  2. Exit from Excel.  Search for the following files on your hard drive (and connected network drives, if you have any), and delete them if you find them:
  3. Open Excel again, choose "add-ins ..." from the "tools" menu, and look for any entries that include "qtp" or "Queueing ToolPak."  Click on each such entry and click "Yes" when asked whether you want to remove the entry from the list of add-ins.
