Marketing 465 - School of Retailing Internship Program

Course Objectives:

  1. Expose students to some of the challenges and opportunities provided by management and professional careers in the retailing and services sector.
  2. Encourage students to apply some of the tools being developed in the BComm. program to address real business problems.
  3. Build relationships between the Faculty of Business, the School of Retailing partners and the students.
  4. Allow industry leaders an opportunity to access business students through an internship program.
  5. Develop networking opportunities for students in the business community.

Prerequisites:

The Internship Program is offered to 3rd and 4th year students who have already completed Marketing 301. Students who have taken courses from the retailing and services major stream will be best positioned to undertake more advanced or specialized responsibilities as part of their internship experience.

Time Commitment for Internship Placements:

The minimum timeline for the placement is a 13-week period between May and August (starting no later than Monday, May 10, 2010). If mutually agreed upon, the internship position can continue until the end of August.

Fee Structure:

1. Students will pay the University to register in Marketing 465 (3 credits).
2. Students will also pay the School of Retailing a $250 + GST administration fee for the placement, site visits, and coordination of topics.

Course Evaluation:

Formal grades in this course will be based on performance in each of the following areas:
    Employer Evaluation 35%
    Academic Paper 35%
    Student Presentation 20%
    Journal 10%

Employer Evaluation (35%): The Employer will evaluate the intern at the end of the term based on several criteria including communication skills, productivity, problem solving skills, planning, and technical skills.

Academic Paper (35%): Students will be required to write a final paper on an important issue for the organization in which they are placed. Both the intern supervisor and Director of the School of Retailing must approve the topic of the paper. An outline of the paper is due by Friday, July 23, 2010 with the final version due Friday, August 13, 2010.

Student Presentation (20%): As part of the intern experience, a 10-minute power-point presentation that will reflect the final report and the intern’s experience will be given to other intern students and the employers. This presentation is scheduled for Monday, August 16, 2010.

Journal (10%) The student is required to keep a weekly journal in order to keep track of important events that take place during the internship experience. The intern is encouraged to take particular note of instances where concepts or lessons from their academic program provide additional insight or perspective. The journal can then be used as the basis for the final paper. The Director of the School of Retailing will provide suggestions for the weekly entries.
